What is The Language Buffet?

The Language Buffet is a foreign language conversation school that provides conversation practice and limited instruction in various foreign languages. Courses are designed around understanding and using a foreign language. Our aim is to promote an increased understanding of foreign languages and cultures on the Marshall University campus and in our surrounding community, which has implications for economic development and our future in an increasingly global and interdependent world.

What languages can I study?

Depending on the availability of instructors, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Arabic. A native speaker of the language conducts each course. The instructors are international students at Marshall University, primarily students in the L.E.A.P. Intensive English Program. These students receive tuition for the L.E.A.P. Program in exchange for teaching in the Language Buffet.

Where are the classes?

All classes are held on the Marshall University campus in the basement of Morrow Library in the L.E.A.P. Center.

Who can take the classes?

Everyone is welcome to take these classes, and all can benefit from them. Whether you are traveling abroad, wanting to brush up on your skills or just looking for a challenge, we have the language course for you. We offer the opportunity to learn conversational foreign language while providing the chance to meet people from other cultures.

When can I take the classes?

Year-round courses are offered with 10-week programs that begin third week of September (Fall Semester), second week of February (Spring Semester) and second week of June (Summer Semester). Each language course is offered on a non-credit basis with classes that meet two hours per week, 6PM to 8PM, Monday through Thursday.

How much does the program cost?

$100 per 10-week language course. Funds generated from the tuition are used to develop scholarships for international students, thereby contributing to the internationalization of the Marshall University campus and its surrounding community.

Can children study in the Language Buffet?

No. The Language Buffet classes are intended for adults. For children, we have established Language Buffet Jr. which provides after-school foreign language study programs in local elementary and middle schools. If you would like to enroll your child in aforeign language after-school programs at a local elementary or middle school, please contact cip@marshall.edu for more information. We would also like to hear from teachers or principals who would like a Language Buffet Jr. after-school or summer camp program offered at their school.

What if the language I want to study in not offered?

We are always interested in starting new language programs if there is sufficent interest and available instructors with native fluency in the language. Please email cip@marshall.edu and let us know what languages you would like offered in the future.
