Frequently Asked Questions
You must have completed your freshman year before you can study abroad. Most exchange programs (for one semester or academic year) are aimed at students who are in their junior year of study. Typically, exchange students should have a 3.0 GPA, be self-motivated, independent, and have a strong interest in learning about other cultures and an inclination toward adventure. Summer Programs offer more flexible admissions and are highly recommended for first-time study abroad students. 2. Where can I study abroad? With Marshall University’s new partnership with ISEP you can study in over 35 countries and 125 sites. There are also many departmental programs that Marshall offers; check with your advisors. 3. How do I know where I can go with my major? You can go to www.isep.org and go under U.S. Students. From there you can search your major and the language you would like to study in. This will give you a list of schools available for you. 4. To study abroad do I have to learn a foreign language? Not necessarily. ISEP offers many Universities who have class instruction in English. 5. Can I still use my financial aid and scholarships while studying abroad? Absolutely! If you go on an ISEP exchange program through Marshall you pay tuition, room and board here as if you are studying here while abroad. 6. If I do not go on a Marshall Exchange program can I still use my Financial Aid and Scholarships? You may be able to use your financial aid if you receive grants or loans. But Marshall Scholarships cannot be used unless it is an exchange program. The best person to talk to would be Jack Tony, Director of Financial Aid. 7. Can I receive foreign language credit for studying abroad? Definitely! There are many exchange sites through Marshall where you can take a foreign language and transfer back credit.
8. How long will my exchange last? You can study abroad through Marshall for one year, one semester, or even just a summer. 9. Who can I talk to about study abroad program? The Study Abroad Advisors are located in the International Programs Office on the third floor (320) Old Main. Study Abroad Advisors are available everyday from 8-4. 10. What are my chances of placement? With our new program you chance of placement is excellent at one of your top three choices. 11. What are the deadlines for applications? Fall Deadlines: February 1 Spring Deadlines: September 1 12. Will the classes I take there transfer back to Marshall? Yes! There is a credit evaluation form that you will have to fill out with your advisor before you leave to determine what classes you will be taking and how the credits will transfer back to MU. You can also determine if you want them transferred back as grades, or credit- no credit. 13. How much does a plane ticket cost? This depends on where you are going; usually air fare varies between $500 to $1500 dollars. 14. Do we offer any scholarships? The study abroad students association offers several scholarships; you must become a member before you are eligible. The Study Abroad office, Old Main 320, does have a list of scholarships you can apply for stop by and pick one up. 15. If I do not go on a Marshall sponsored transfer can I still get my credit back? Yes, all credits will transfer, but you must be sure to fill out the credit approval form. This form can be picked up in the Study Abroad office, Old Main 320. 16. If I study abroad will I be set back a semester? In most cases no, this depends on your major and where you want to go. Southern Hemisphere semesters sometimes can interfere with Marshall's semesters. In general we can usually find a way around it. 17. When should I apply for my passport? ASAP! Sometimes it can take up to 2 – 4 months to get your passport back. If you know you want to study abroad, you should get it right away. The closest place to apply for it around here is the Post Office in the West End of Huntington. 18. Can I work while I study abroad? This depends on the country; if you want to work, ask us about working visas in the country you will be studying in.
